DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting panel discussion on the impact of climate change in Montana. The panel will be moderated with an opportunity for questions.\nThis event will be in the Community Room at the Billings Public Library.\nMore information about the speakers:\n\nDr. Steven Running\n\nDr. Steven W. Running received his Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from Colorado State University, and has been with the University of Montana, Missoula since 1979, where he is a University Regents Professor of Global Ecology. His primary research interest is the development of global and regional ecosystem biogeochemical models integrating remote sensing with bioclimatology and terrestrial ecology. He is the Land Team Leader for the NASA Earth Observing System, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, and is responsible for the EOS global terrestrial net primary production and evapotranspiration datasets. He has published more than 280 scientific articles and two books. He was a co-Lead Chapter Author for the 2014 U.S. National Climate Assessment. He currently Chairs the NASA Earth Science Subcommittee, and is a member of the NASA Science Advisory Council. Dr. Running was a chapter Lead Author for the 4th Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Dr. Running is an elected Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, has been designated a Highly Cited Researcher by the Institute for Scientific Information, and in 2014 was designated one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” in Geosciences. In the popular press, his essay in 2007, “The 5 Stages of Climate Grief” has been widely quoted.\n\n\nDr. Robert Byron\n\nDr. Robert G. Byron, MD, MPH, FACP, is an internist in Montana. After receiving a BA in biology from Vanderbilt University he served for four years as an officer in the US Navy. He received his MD degree from the University of Louisville, graduating magna cum laude, then completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Along with Lori, his wife and a pediatrician, he worked for over two decades on the Crow Indian Reservation before retiring to help start Bighorn Valley Health Center, now called OneHealth, a federally-qualified health center in Hardin, Montana. Robert is a former governor of the Montana Chapter of the American College of Physicians and was appointed to the Montana Board of Environmental Review from 2105-2017. Together he and his wife helped found Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate. He is one of the lead authors of “Climate Change and Human Health – A Special Report of the Montana Climate Assessment,” and is a chapter author on the National Climate Assessment 5, currently under development.\n\n\nDr. Bruce Maxwell\n\nDr. Bruce Maxwell is a Professor of Applied Plant Ecology and Agroecology in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Science at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. He was Interim Department Head in 2008 and 2009. Bruce is a native of Montana from Hamilton. He attended MSU for a B.S. Degree in Botany and following a Peace Corps experience, received a M.S. Degree in Agronomy. Bruce returned to Montana State University in 1992 from the University of Minnesota where he was Assistant Professor of Weed Ecology in the Agronomy and Plant Genetics Department. Bruce holds a doctorate degree in Crop Science and Forest Ecology from Oregon State University. Maxwell has received national awards for outstanding teaching, best peer reviewed papers and outstanding graduate student from the Weed Science Society of America. During his career he has published nearly 100 scientific journal articles and book chapters, chaired and been a member on numerous agricultural and ecological research grant review panels and been a member of two National Academy of Science – National Research Council Committees. His current research has two main focus areas: 1) Understanding the how different forcing variables and processes influence the rate of plant invasions, and 2) How changes in climate, crop price and input management may interact to drive agroecosystems over sustainability thresholds.\n\n\n\n
